Give Me To Drink

Text: John4:5-12

Introduction:

How you treat a man depends largely on your knowledge of who He is. If you don’t know a person, even if He is the President of a nation, you are likely to treat him like any other person. But as soon as you discover who he is your reaction will change. How we treat God depends on how much of Him we have known.

In our text, the Lord asked the woman to give Him water and she started arguing – I mean serious argument. Why was she arguing? This woman was arguing because of so many things she did not know about the Lord Jesus.

  1. She knew Jesus as Jew but not as the Messiahvs. 9, 25-26. She came up with tribal sentiments against the Lord. Jesus is the Lord of all tribes and came for all tribes. Acts 1:8, John 3:16. In Christ no tribal segregation. Rom 10:12, Rev 7:9. Anyone who plays or talks about tribalism in church does not know Him. This Woman almost missed her miracle because of her mindset on tribal sentiments.
  2. She did not know what the Lord has in store for her vs. 10-11. She did not know that the One asking her for water is the Creator of all fountains of waters in the world – vs 10. Jesus answered by saying “if thou knowest...”. Hosea 4:6. Someone who created the oceans and seas was asking for a cup of water – what an honour! But then, not recognized by the woman!

What is the Lord asking from you? I'm sure it can't be compared to the honour, glory and greatness awaiting your destiny.

Gold or silver or cattle or whatever we possess – He has all in abundance.

Haggai 2:8 says

The silver is mine and the gold is mine,' declares the LORD Almighty... (NIV)

It is just an honour, a privilege that he has chosen to use us. The knowledge of His personality and riches should humble us and put an end to every argument.

3. She did not know that the Lord can never be limited vs. 11 – “sir thou hast nothing to draw with” - She said the One who has the whole world in His hand, who spoke and the earth was formed, has nothing. Jer 32:17, 27. Let’s Refresh our Memory of What God has Done:

  • He provided water in the desert –Exo 17:6
  • He provided manna in the wilder – Exo 16:15
  • He sent cooked food to Elijah two times daily for months. Ravens brought the food and came back to pack the plates – 1 Kings 17:6
  • He turned the Mouth of a fish to a central bank where Peter withdrew money – Matt 17:27
  • He turned water to an expressway – Matt 14:23-27.

He chooses to do whatever He does. He chose to die, He chose to rise without anyone’s assistance and He chose to ascend – and no devil, nobody could stop Him.

He cannot be limited! Him asking us for anything is a great honour.

4. She did not know that her destiny was the ultimate target of the Lord’s request – vs. 16-19, 28-30. • The woman that was very popular for a regular story to marital failures, suddenly became popular with good news.

• Widow of Zarephath – 1 Kings 17:10-15 her destiny was the target, not Elijah’s.

God suspended the direct supply to Elijah to create an opportunity for her and her family to live. God is just creating an opportunity for us and our family to escape what will befall others.

Conclusion: Anytime arguments arise in you against divine instructions, always remember that destiny is at risk. Devil is the author of arguments. He won against Adam and Eve and they lost their destiny. Ask God to open your eyes so that you can know how big, how great, how rich and loving the One asking you for ‘water’ is. The Lord put A NEW SONG OF GLORY in the mouth of this woman, beloved it’s your turn this month!
